People change. Writing reflects life. I can't help but wonder what life events for Lynn Austin, her family, or friends may have provoked this story to life. Even though I'd call this story "brooding,"I came away with encouragement.

I had minor trouble following the storyline as backstory emerged, but I could follow. If you are a "skimmer", this book is not for you. The reader must tune in to the main characters to keep them straight, especially Eleanor and Cynthia.

Austin keeps pushing the reader toward resolution. So many life stories tumble onto each other—Rory's decision pulling Fiona to America. The stock market crash of '29 affecting real and false families. Peripheral faith falling short in troubled times. Lynn Austin kept the cascade of generational choices flowing until the very end. I had to keep reading.

The highlight for me was the quote from the Lenten prayer. Somehow I wish that had been in the front of the book. It won't be a spoiler but rather a tease to lure you into the book:
"Let what we suffer teach us to be merciful—let our sins teach us to forgive."

All She Ever Wanted Lynn Austin 9780764228896 Books Reviews

What a wonderful, albeit painful story of the twists and turns in each persons' life. The author so clearly introduced each character and then unraveled the truth behind each of these people.

It reminded me of the historical sagas that take you through multiple generations as you see how every decision we make has a consequence, so choose wisely. It also reminded me that through Jesus, redemption is right there!!!
Lynn Austin masterfully weaves a family tale of three different women in three different generations in one family who remarkably look like all of us. Messy. Disappointing. Misunderstood. Struggling. Overcomers. Who somehow find Jesus along the way.
Lynn Austin never disappoints. This was the first book I read of Lynn's bu since this one, I have purchased all her books that are available. This was such a good book. For me, it was more about finding yourself and realizing the reason you are the way you are is because of you upbringing. Sometimes you have to go back to your roots and that what this woman in the book did. I found this book accidently in soft cover at my in-laws retirement center library. After I read it, I had to return it but I wanted a copy to keep so I bought the hardcover. I loaned it to a friend and also had another friend purchase it. It was that good. Read it - I don't think you will be disappointed.
I choose this rating because I saw mine story. All I wanted was to be loved. I loved how this book showed how our decisions have horrific effect on our presence and future. Women I 've come to realize that God is who first loved us........ Anyone else is extra. But, he is enough until He sees the right man. It started off as a curse from her earthly father for greed. Parents, watch what you put in your children's future. I would recommend this book to man and female. Thank you for the blessing.
I persevered with this book till the end and found some parts interesting enough but overall it was just too disjointed to make the reading of it a pleasure..Highlighted one quote "let what we suffer teach us to be merciful, let our sins teach us to be kind" The rest of the book will be easily forgotten by me as I found the disjointedness off putting, plus the lay out on the kindle was awful! Couldn't in all honesty recommend very highly nd wouldn't rush to buy a paper copy which is my own personal guideline 're rating book for the kindle.
Lynn Austin is one of my favorite authors and I always find her stories compelling. All She Ever Wanted is no exception. I was quickly drawn into the drama of the four generations - daughter Joelle, mother Kathleen, grandmother Eleanor and great-grandmother Fiona. All the women except teen-aged Joelle (who plays the part of a catalyst in this book but is not really fleshed out) were intriguing. I found myself immersed in the individual stories of the three older women and how they tied together. Running away from one's problems is nothing new - I've done it myself - and in this case, the sins of the mothers are truly visited on the daughters. I enjoy Lynn Austin's crisp and realistic dialogue. She has really done her homework when researching historical locations and idioms.

So why not five stars? The wrapping up of the story line left me feeling dissatisfied. SPOILER ALERT! I was glad Kathleen's family was reunited with Christ as their center, but the way Eleanor's life ended did not ring true. Does a woman cut off all ties with her mother because of the mother's sins? I have seen real mothers and daughters that had terrible relationships and yet were always connected, even by the most tenuous thread. And that Eleanor would locate and contact the mobster from long ago and attempt to blackmail him...really? Why should such a nefarious mobster care if she had witnessed him kill someone years past. (Perhaps I was thinking of the Godfather here.) And that she was the only one of the women to die without redemption was unsatisfying to me. SPOILER ALERT ENDED!

But the author is entitled to do with her characters as she pleases; after all, they are her creations. They had all become so real to me that I was totally engrossed in them, and wanted more, especially in Eleanor's case. I would recommend this book. That it isn't one of my absolute favorites which include A Woman's Place, Wings of Refuge, and Until We Reach Home, shouldn't matter one bit!
I loved the story line. It's even worth a second read! But since it covered 4 generations, I had some difficulty keeping all the characters straight. However that is my problem, because I am nearly 70 years old and have just been put on meds for memory loss. 😕 Even so, I couldn't stop reading it! It is a wonderful Christian story that showed how Christ can work on our lives IF we open up to Him. I highly recommend this book.
